Short local bike routes

Lots of requests about cycle routes that are not too taxing, are suitable for children and families. I will put up links to different routes over the next while.

Lanigan’s Lock to Sleatty and home

A couple of kilometres on the Barrow Track, wheel off at Lanigans Lock and head across towards Killeshin Church on a really quiet minor road. Don’t turn up to the church, continue straight and take a right onto the Castlecomer road. After 200 metres turn right across by Killeshin GAA and down onto the Portlaoise Road. Take a left and then a right and follow the road around to the right. It brings you back into Graiguecullen.

I have often passed this way by car and always think this would be great cycling country in a part of Ireland that is hidden from tourists and the rest of us too. Loads of interesting places, history and scenery to make the effort worthwhile…

One of our favourite Irish legends is the Children of Lir. I passed by Lake Derravarragh today on my way to Brewster Park in Enniskillen.

The children of Lir were turned into swan by their jealous step mother and forced to spend 900 years as beautiful swans, 300 years on Lake Derravarragh, 300 years on the Straits of Moyle and 300 years on Inis Glora. The spell was only broken when they heard the bell of St Patrick…..a lovely fairytale which is well worth reading in full!
